Homes For Sale In Livonia

Following the displacement of indigenous tribes, European-American settlers from New England and New York established themselves in Livonia, a community named after a New York town from which many of them hailed. Established as a township in 1835, this area evolved from small communities like Elmwood, a railway stop, and Giltedge, known for its post offices.

Incorporated as a city in 1950 to leverage tax benefits from the Detroit Race Course, this city later attracted Palestinian and Lebanese immigrants, contributing to its diverse community. Notably, six U.S. presidents, including Richard Nixon and George W. Bush, have visited Livonia.

The city spans a total area of 36 square miles. It features a couple of waterways, including sections of Newburgh Lake and Nankin Lake, situated to the south and southwest. These two lakes are interconnected by a river and the locally known Hines Drive.

This area boasts a diverse array of amenities including schools, colleges, parks, a recreation center, St. Mary Mercy Hospital, and a vibrant commercial sector with restaurants and retail stores like Laurel Park Place, an upscale mall with 74 stores.

The city has seen significant retail transformations, with the former Wonderland Mall now Wonderland Village, anchored by Walmart and Target, and the mall redeveloped into the city’s marketplace featuring major retailers. Additionally, the city is a hub for sports, home to the largest amateur hockey association in Michigan and the City Soccer Club, one of the state’s largest soccer programs.
